ODYSSEY Programs – Frequently Asked Questions

Program Costs

What are the costs associated with your program?

Our airplanes rent for $250 per hour (oil and fuel included), which means $125 per hour when split. There is a $750.00 registration fee (non-refundable). Additionally, we require that each pilot carry Airplane Renter’s Insurance during their time in our program. Otherwise, all other amenities, including lodgings, are included at no additional cost.

The Registration Fee covers: orientation time and materials, your checkout flights, and CFI time for the two different airplanes (Harmony and VL3).

If you weigh over 230 lbs. or prefer to fly solo, we offer the plane to pilots with at least a PPL for the full rate of $250 per hour (oil and fuel included).

When do I pay for the program?

You will be required to pay in advance to “lock-in” your seat on our booking calendar. Odyssey is typically fully booked weeks in advance, so reserving a seat is time sensitive. The payment for your initial hours may be completed online with a payment link provided, using either ACH or credit card methods. Once payment is made, a copy of your receipt along with confirmation of your program details will be emailed to you. If looking to build over 100 hours at Odyssey, payments may be split up.

How do I pay for the program?

During the final onboarding call, you will be guided through the payment process using PreFlight, our main pilot accounts and scheduling software. All payment requests are emailed to you; simply follow the link to make a payment online via ACH or credit card. This information is also outlined in our Onboarding Blueprint which will be provided to you along the way. You may replenish your account as needed for the duration of your program, and optionally extend your dates based on availability.

Do you offer financing?

Yes we do! We’ve partnered with Stratus Financial to offer Time-Builders opportunities to reach their goals easier than ever before.

Do you offer any kind of discounts?

We’ve developed our program to offer wholesale flight hours at a bulk price on a fundamental level. Our rate is already discounted compared to industry standards, so we do not offer any further discounting.

However, for active-duty, reserve, or veterans of military service, we offer a $500 discount to the Registration Fee.

If I need 100 PIC hours, how many hours should I buy?

Usually, 106 (+6%). At the absolute minimum, 92% of the hours that you fly at Odyssey will be PIC time. We rent our planes based on the Hobbs time, and when flying in the Safety Pilot Position, you’ll be taking 0.2 – 0.4 PIC hours off of each leg.

An easy way to calculate this is to multiply the amount of PIC hours you require by 1.08. So, 100 × 1.08 = 108! In doing things, you’re just adding 8% to the total Hours required.

Here’s an easy break down:

50 PIC Hours = 54 Hours Purchased

100 PIC Hours = 108 Hours Purchased

150 PIC Hours = 162 Hours Purchased

200 PIC Hours = 216 Hours Purchased

Program Logistics

How does the program work?

Please watch these videos to learn the basics. Feel free to come back after for the specifics and if you still have questions, share them in the Pilot Interest Form or reach out to us in any of the other ways provided on our Contact page.

How long do I have to commit for?

Full-Time Program | 35 hours minimum
A 35 hour Full-Time Program can usually be completed in about 10 days, including travel, orientation, and two (2) checkout flights. For longer programs, you may split up your total hours goal into smaller blocks of time over multiple visits, that meets both your and Odyssey’s schedules.

Additionally, we do ask Full-Timers to take a break for about 4-7 days after flying 200 hours consecutively. Pilots may choose to stay in the lodging during the break or plan a visit elsewhere, before getting back on the schedule. This helps to mitigate the long term fatigue and burn out associated with flying 30–50 hours a week for 4+ weeks. Please note, we do not “lock-in” a pilot’s seat, lodging, or hours into our Full-Time Program Schedule until the hours have been paid for.

Part-Time Program | 5 hours minimum – 35 hours maximum
You will receive a “Part-Timer Availability” form to fill out and submit weekly to let us know when you can fly. Our scheduler will use these preferences to work you into the Full-Time schedule based on available seats. The flight schedule is determined in advance and you will be notified about any changes or opportunities via email.

What are the requirements to build-time?

For all of our programs, we require that the pilot have at least their Private Pilot’s Certificate, current Instrument Rating and be able to legally rent and fly airplanes in the United States.

To fly with a partner and take advantage of the Split Rate, you must be Instrument Current.

If you are not Instrument Current but have a PPL, or you weigh over 230 pounds, you may fly solo at the Full Rate.

How does the schedule work?

Our Full-Time pilots fly 5-6 days a week, with an optional day off on Saturdays. Each airplane reservation is made for 7-14 hours at a time and pilots may fly at their discretion within the given time frame. Pilots build between 6-10 hours a day on average, NOT TO EXCEED 14 hours in one (1) 24 hour period, nor 65 hours in one (1) week. Pilot partners, aircraft and reservation times are predetermined, based on weight-balance, aircraft availability and weather.

The schedule is updated weekly.

What time of the day can I fly?

We schedule our pilots to fly during the day in winter and at night during the summer. These times of the day provide our pilots the most pleasant flying experience and offer the opportunity for the most flight hours in a week.

Our hangar is accessible to our pilots 24/7, with the provided keyless access codes. The only times that our planes are unavailable to pilots are during brief periods of extreme weather or during regular scheduled maintenance.

Are there CFI’s on staff for training and Checkout flights?

Yes. We offer training opportunities to local pilots, and checkout flights are included in the orientation process for Time Builders.

Do you offer transportation?

We offer complimentary Electric Bikes (limited quantity) for our Full-Time Pilots on a first come, first served basis. We recommend taking advantage of the beautiful, local bike paths enroute to the hangar. It is usually about a 20-minute bike ride between the hangar and all lodgings.

Lodging

What’s the lodging like?

Our pilot houses are similar to Airbnb-style accommodations. Each home is fully furnished, including a complete kitchen, living areas, and well-appointed bedrooms. Standard amenities include Wi-Fi, smart TVs, and filtered water from the refrigerator.

Every pilot has a private bedroom outfitted with a full-sized bed (bedding and bath towels provided) and a closet. Each home features a master bedroom with an en-suite bathroom; all other bedrooms share one or more bathrooms. Master rooms are assigned based on seniority—when one becomes available, it goes to the longest-tenured pilot in the house.

Can my family come?

No, we have a strict No Guests/No Pets policy for the safety and comfort of our other pilots as well as the preservation of the property.

How far is the lodging from the hangar?

Our lodgings are about a 10 minute drive to the hangar or a nice 20-minute bike ride through the local trails. For more information, read “Do you offer transportation?” above.

Planes and Maintenance

What is your aircraft fleet like?

We have 5 JMB VL3 aircraft that are fully equipped with Garmin cockpits. We also have 7 Harmonys that are equipped with identical equipment as the VL3; Dual Garmin G3x touch screens, Garmin G375 IFR certified navigator, and autopilot. All of these planes are Single-Engine, IFR Certified, Glass Cockpit, Technologically Advanced Special-Category Light Sport Aircraft.

We have plans to increase our fleet in the future with more S-LSA’s and Multi-Engine options.

How are the airplanes maintained?

We have a certified, Full-Time in-house maintenance team who regularly inspect and maintain our fleet on property.

Do the airplanes have weight/height restrictions?

Yes, our airplanes have a seat weight restriction of 250 lbs. For our program, you must be below 250 lbs in order to fly solo and must be below 230 lbs to fly with a partner. Height is limited to approximately 6 foot 4 inches. Please note that we do have a limited capacity for pilots that are over 210 lbs.

What other restrictions do the airplanes have?

Our planes can fly at any time and shoot a variety of instrument approaches at the pilot’s discretion. However, they legally cannot fly under IMC even though they are fully equipped to do so.

Odyssey Flight Training

What is a Discovery Flight?

A Discovery Flight, sometimes called an introductory flight, is a short flight alongside a certified flight instructor that gives you a chance to experience what it’s like to be inside the cockpit and take control of a smaller aircraft. During most Discovery Flights, the student sits in the left seat, and the instructor allows the student to fly for a majority of the flight.

Discovery Flights are a lot of fun and give you a chance to experience what it’s like to be a pilot and do some sightseeing. However, they are meant to be a little more structured than a tourist/scenic flight and give you an idea of what to expect during flight training. Often the instructor will go over briefings with you, what it takes to become a pilot, training structures, and more. The goal of a Discovery Flight is for you to leave feeling well-informed and having had fun doing what you (hopefully) want to do long-term!

What are the costs associated with Flight Training?

Our Discovery Flights cost $150.00 and Student Registration is a one-time $150.00 fee.

Our planes currently cost $190.00 per hour to rent (fuel and oil included) for instruction, and the instructor’s rate is an additional $60.00 per hour (paid directly to the CFI).

It takes on average 40–80 hours to complete your Private Pilot Certification; and the total cost would come to approximately $9,000.00-$18,000.00.

What certificates can I earn from Odyssey Flight Training?

Here at Odyssey, you can receive your Sport Pilot License (SPL), Private Pilot License (PPL), and your Commercial Single-Engine License (CSEL)!
