Frequently Asked Questions

How Much Does ODYSSEY PILOT HOURS Cost?

Our airplanes rent for $230 per hour (oil and fuel included), which means $115 per hour when split. There is a $750.00 registration fee. Additionally, we require that each pilot carry Airplane Renter’s Insurance during their time in our program. Otherwise, all other amenities, including lodgings, are included at no additional cost.

The Registration Fee covers Orientation time and materials, Registration time and materials, your checkout flights and CFI time for two different airplanes (SportCruiser and VL3), and a background check.

If you weigh over 230 lbs. or prefer to fly solo, we offer the plane to pilots with at least a PPL for the full rate of $230 per hour (oil and fuel included).

Do You Provide Lodgings For Time Builders At ODYSSEY?

Lodgings are always available for all Full-Time Pilots, and per availability for Part-Time Pilots, at no additional cost.

We akin our lodgings to an Airbnb; they are fully furnished across the board (kitchen, living room, bedroom, etc.) We have clean water from the refrigerators, Wi-Fi, and some light snacks available.

Each pilot has their own room (with a Full-sized bed, nightstand, dresser, and closet) and they sometimes share a bathroom. The master bedrooms are seniority based; so when a pilot moves out of the master, the longest flying pilot will take that room afterwards.

Our lodgings are under 10 minutes drive to the hangar or a light, 20-minute e-bike ride through the local bike trails.

How Many Hours Can I Build, And How Long Will It Take?

For our Full-Time Program, you can build any amount of hours that you need. There is a 50 hour minimum for your first visit and every visit after has a 35 hour minimum. We highly recommend that you take at least a week long break between every 200 hours that you build in order to preserve your health and well being.

For our Part-Time Program, the maximum amount of hours that you can purchase at a time is 35 with a minimum of 5. Each time you fly as a Part-Timer, you’re welcome to stay in our beautiful Colorado lodgings the night before or after at no additional cost. The Part-Time Program’s availability is determined by the openings in our Full-Time schedule.

Curious how long it will take? Here’s an easy breakdown for the Full-Time Program:

50 Hours – 2 weeks
100 Hours – 3 to 4 weeks
200 Hours – 5 to 7 weeks

How Do You Build Pilot-In-Command Time With A Partner?

What is a “Safety Pilot”? A Safety Pilot is a rated pilot who helps maintain visual separation from other aircraft, clouds, and terrain while another pilot is wearing view limiting devices (under the hood) for the purposes of simulating instrument conditions.

Why does this matter? According to CFR 91.109 and CFR 61.51, as long as the PIC is under the hood, both the PIC and the Safety Pilot can log the flight time as “PIC time”.

The Safety Pilot cannot log PIC time during taxi, takeoff, runup, and landing because the PIC cannot be under the hood during these procedures. Therefore, our pilots will consecutively switch between being the PIC and the Safety Pilot between flights to equally build hours in tandem.

Airline recruiters love that you’ll be practicing Crew Resource Management, flying full instrument approaches, and exercising simulated First Officer responsibilities.
